The Denver Department of Public Health and Environment and Denver Public Libraries have stocked each of the city's 26 libraries with bike repair kits that locals can check out for free.
People who bike as their main way to get around -- some of whom are experiencing homelessness or are lower income -- will benefit, as well as people looking for one less excuse not to ride. In a city with bigger barriers to biking, it's a modest move by the city to encourage riding instead of driving, but a move nonetheless.
"There's no question, biking can help make you healthier," said Bob McDonald, executive director of the public health department, in a press release. "It strengthens your muscles, improves heart health, lowers cholesterol, prevents disease and lowers body fat percentage."
The kits include a pump, a set of wrenches, tire levers, tube patches and glue, and illustrated instructions in English and Spanish. Anyone with a library card can borrow a kit for up to two hours.
